review 1: Rebus working in cold case section is persuaded to look into a disappearance and uncovers a possible series . Gets himself into a current case team with Siobhan Clarke as the case seems to link up with his, and then uses dodgy methods to get to the killer - and old contacts which lead him to be under investigation by the Complaints - Malcolm Fox etc. Haven't read these latter books in order quite but doesn't matter too much, always a good read.
review 2: I was glad to see the Inspector Rebus series return; I am thinking of trying the Malcolm Fox series. Mr. Rankin has Malcolm Fox making appearances in this novel investigating Rebus and his methods. I have to admit, I am not sure who to root for in this book. Rebus thinks he is doing good and that the ends ju... morestify the means. It was not the best Rebus novel but I did enjoy the storyline, and the little twists that were sprinkled through out the book. If you have enjoyed previous Insp. Rebus novels by Ian Rankin it is a definite read. If you like your detectives Scottish, slightly hammered, on the right side but necessarily doing right this series and this book are for you. less
