review 1: I did not really have as much of a problem with the slow start as some of the other reviewers on this site. I quite enjoyed getting to know Sefton and his know-it-all polyglot self-taught employer. The real problem was that there was no mystery to be solved in this book. Don't bother looking for clues in the long conversations about plants and politics. Similarly, relationships do not go anywhere, and so this ends up being nothing more than an initially pleasant, but ultimately unsatisfying, trip through one English county.
review 2: I had high expectations for this book, but I'm quite disappointed. I can't say the characters are likeable or interesting. Sefton gets a good start, but loose himself just after the second or third chapter. He can't even keep up wi... moreth the most basic observations and if that's a way to mirror the reader's admiration at Mr Morley's intelligence I don't feel very flattered. Mr Morley is an annoying know-it-all. Yes, annoying. Not the smart kind of person he was probably meant to be, most certainly not a brilliant one, like Holmes or Poirot, to whom he can’t even compare. All the bantering with his daughter aims, probably, to show some wittiness, but she looks like a female version of his father, just irritating as he is.There is not much to add plot-wise, except that it was so boring I was tempted to abandon the book halfway through. less
