review 1: I was so blown away by "Cathedral of the sea" that i couldn't wait to read another book by the same author. That too a historical novel. Sadly, the book didn't live up to my expectations. the plot gets very messy halfway through the book. There are too many things going on that at times the backdrop of the story seems to go faster than the story itself. Somewhere close to the end the book gets back on track. Hernando's actions and dilemmas are easier to understand and even easier to justify. As a hero, Hernando, the protagonist, is all about survival. Being a total pragmatist he faces situations as they come. He kills, saves, hides, escapes, jump in front of a raging bull, all when the situation demands it. As a person, his personality matures rather slowly. Upto a point, ... morethe story of Hernando was revolving around Fatima but even that got lost in a flurry of events some how.May be, had i approached it with lesser or no expectations i would have enjoyed the book a lot better. But after Cathedral of the Sea, I have high expectations from this author. Very high. This book didn't get me excited. It didn't get me hungry to read. It just didnt' do it.
review 2: Me gustó, pero esta algo lento y la trama es bastante trágica, aunque es de esperarse, pues los personajes principales son musulmanes españoles en una época de excesiva opresión espiritual en ese país. Siempre me impacta todos los horrores que se cometen en el nombre de Dios y es algo que sigue y sigue hasta la actualidad, pero no deja de sorprenderme. Al menos empiezas a medio entender (no justificar) de donde viene tanto odio heradado y que la humanidad aunque no lo parezca va avanzando en conciencia y tolerancia. Pero si vale la pena, y lo recomiendo sobre todo a los que les guste este genero histórico. less
