review 1: Dit is zeker een goed boek, puur vakmanschap zelfs, zoals ik van de auteur gewend ben. Maar toch leg ik hem aan de kant. Het is zo triest, zo hard, zo wreed, ik kon er gewoon niet meer tegen.Nu in onzekere tijden van IS en andere onverdraagzaamheid (helaas vaak nog steeds van religieuze origine) bekruipt mij te veel het gevoel dat we in 600 jaar niks maar dan absoluut niks hebben bijgeleerd... desondanks begin ik er vast nog wel eens aan, maar nu tijd voor iets anders, iets luchtigers...
review 2: I decided to read this book because I enjoy historical novels and because I read the Cathedral of the Sea, which I loved. The book tells the story of Hernando, bastard son of a priest with a moorish, who tries to be accepted by the the moorish community and struggles ... morefor acceptance of his religion by christians. Just as in the Cathedral of the Sea, it is a historical picture of life and customs, with special focus on religion and expulsion of the moriscos from Spain. In my opinion the book has a good story, but it is so descriptive that becomes tiresome. I think that with fewer pages could be an excellent book ... less
