review 1: I have read a number of Inglath Cooper's books so I was quite excited to read "Crossing Tinker's Knob". I was even more excited to read the book when I read her letter at the beginning which described the area this book was based on - and I realized I grew up in the area. Crossing Tinker's Knob is a "different" type of story than you are probably used to reading from Inglath Cooper, but its worth the read. The story bounces back and forth from the present, where Becca and Matt see each other after 18 years, and the past, where Becca and Matt met and developed a relationship before it all went south. There were secrets that were slowly revealed throughout the story and when they were finally revealed, I was reading them through tears in my eyes. For those who aren't fa... moremiliar with the Dunkard / German Baptist community, it may be a difficult read because it "feels" like a historical fiction when you read some of those parts of the story. But, it was easy from the author's words for me to picture what was happening in the story - I could see the locations in my mind since I grew up in the area. Her descriptions of people and places really helped me SEE the story in my head. The only reason that I didn't give this story 5 stars was the ending. While I thought it was "neat" how the author used a letter from Abby (the daughter) to Becca (the mother) to "wrap up" what happened in the story, I really WANTED the climatic reunion of the characters and the healing of the relationship between Martha and her son as well. I felt that a bit more story development in the climax and resolution was warranted here. Otherwise, this was a moving story about understanding differences in a small community and how those differences can have life-changing implications on life-decisions being made.
review 2: I liked the book being set in and around small towns of Virginia. It was like no story I have ever read. I loved the explanations and lessons learned out of mistakes of love by trying to do the right thing by family, they love. The story would get slow and then peek your interest and become a page Turner. It is usually not my type of reading, however I highly recommend it to readers looking to kick back and share a few tears. less
