review 1: The story takes place in a town in India in 1947 where Bilal, a schoolboy, is facing many tensions. He misses his late mother and strives to care for his loving father who is bedridden, dying of cancer. Bilal is concerned that his father, who loves India, would die heartbroken if he learns that his nation is about to be divided to create Pakistan.Soon people who had peacefully conducted business in the open-air market become restless. Threats of violence escalate as the date for India’s independence and partition approaches. Bilal has made up his mind to shield his father from everything, including news of the coming partition. To do this, Bilal lies and schemes with the help of three close friends, but the ease of lying worries him. Eventually he confesses to the doctor,... more his teacher, and a few others. As the adults go along with Bilal’s scheme, he learns how much his father had helped them long ago.Although he sees himself as the realist that his father is not, Bilal is trying to cling to the only life he knows. This becomes clear in Bilal’s encounters with his estranged older brother, who is caught up in one of the conflicting factions. The father dies a few minutes after partition. Then violence suddenly reaches the house, just as Bilal’s brother comes to snatch him from danger. Bilal flees the town with his aunt, but his heart remains behind, before the time that partition tore apart his family and friends.
review 2: A Beautiful Lieby Irfan MasterHistorical Fiction304 PagesThe thing with lies is that the more you tell, the easier it gets, until you find yourself tangled and your lies become the truth. It's revolutionary India in 1947, and thirteen-year-old Bilal is tangled in a web of lies. Bilal's father is dying, and India is falling apart. There are riots increasingly, until they are everyday, and Bilal is determined, no matter what it takes, to have his father die in peace. Bilal sets out to keep his father oblivious to the war around him, to keep his father with his dying breath believing that India is still as it was long ago. But, the thing with lies is that you can get tangled suddenly, quickly, and without warning. You can tell lies to save others, but lies can ultimately be the undoing of yourself. This was a sweet, poignant book. It was touching and heartwarming, and at one point, I cried. The only thing about it was that the plot was a little predictable. Bilal was an inspiring character. Also, the story revealed a lot about India's culture. This story also sends out a strong message about lies and deciet: how they can save you, and how they can ultimately destroy you. It also is centered around a theme of friendship. Bilal and his friends had a strong bond, and they had to separate in the end. They never got to say goodbye when they were brought apart by the revolution, but their bond was everlasting, despite outside forces. I would recommend this book to everyone. It sends out a strong, resonant message about the truth, and whether lying is worth it. less
