February 2017 – Books & Reviews – Part 1

Hello!

February was another great month for reading and listening to books.  I managed to read nine ebooks and listen to five audiobooks.

The genres include eight books that I consider contemporary, one science fiction/mystery, four paranormal and one historical romance.  I will be posting these in five parts.

First is a contemporary audiobook.

Passing Through
Author: Jay Northcote
Narrator: Matthew Lloyd Davies

Blurb:
Don’t waste a chance at happiness…
Leo is a lonely workaholic with no time for romance in his life. His job in London takes all his energy and commitment. When he goes to Cornwall to stay with his terminally ill uncle, Edwin, love is the last thing Leo expects to find.

Tris lives in a cottage on Edwin’s land. Gay, but still half in the closet, he and Leo bond over their affection for Edwin, and the pull of attraction between them proves too strong to ignore. In Tris’s arms, in the wilds of Cornwall, Leo finds a peace he’d forgotten existed.

On his return to London, Leo finds himself grieving for more than just the loss of his uncle. When some unexpected news gives Leo the chance to return to Cornwall, he’s afraid it will be too late to rekindle things with Tris. But having learned much from his stay with his uncle, Leo doesn’t want to look back and wish he’d done things differently.

It’s time to seize the day—if it’s not already too late.

Review: This is probably my favorite Jay Northcote book to date. It is beautiful and touching. Although Leo has come home to care for his terminally ill Uncle, Edwin, it is not depressing or angst filled. The story involves all three men, Edwin, Leo and Tris. Their stories intertwine and make for a beautiful exploration of choices and opportunities. Love, friendship and taking chances.
The narration by Matthew Lloyd Davies is excellent as always. I adored the ending and epilogue and teared up several times.

Up next is a collection of short stories from one of my favorite paranormal series.

PsyCop Briefs Volume 1
(PsyCop Short stories)
Author: Jordan Castillo Price
Narrator: Gomez Pugh

Blurb:

Victor Bayne sees dead people for a living…and he sees them off the clock, too.  After all, ghosts don’t confine their appearances to a psychic medium’s work hours.

From the macabre to the mundane, from titillating to tender, these PsyCop shorts feature stolen moments between the novels. Get a glimpse of Vic’s life with Jacob between cases, from both men’s viewpoints. Gain new insight on their psychic talents by accompanying them on odd jobs, shopping runs and family visits, or simply enjoy some downtime in the cannery.

The twenty short works range in length from flash fiction to novelettes, woven together to create a novel-length narrative of Vic and Jacob’s relationship from a fresh perspective. The stories are gleaned from various sources: anthologies, newsletters, and web, with four all-new pieces to tie the collection together and delve deeper into your favorite PsyCops’ domestic life.
