review 1: Book 1 of this series, No Proper Lady, set the stage for a potential future invasion of evil paranormal demons. The hero and heroine there were dynamic contrasts who found their match and their mission. A few years later they have begun a school for 'gifted' children. Children who have unique abilities but do not know how to control them and who are the beginning of a corps of people to fight the demon invasion. This book focuses on Olivia Brightmore, a teacher of magic, and Dr. Gareth St. John, a doctor with an enhanced set of medical skills. He remembers her from her previous years as a 'medium' performer and is suspicious of her skills. There is chemistry between them but reluctance to trust; lots of pushing and pulling. The children had some interesting skills that mad... moree for humor and drama, however, the fact that Olivia referred to them by first name when the story is told from her viewpoint and Gareth refers to them by their surname during his side of the story, takes a minute to adjust each time. This h/h also do not have the dynamics of the first couple, Joan and Simon, in their story. Joan and Simon in this story seem to be fillers and lost their spunk. Disappointed with this follow-up.
review 2: I loved this.It had all the fun of a boarding school for paranormal abilities with romance in the Victorian era. I liked how the paranormal side of things was mixed with the historical setting - it can be a balancing act and not all authors succeed.I liked the way Olivia and Gareth circled around each other not quite wanting to admit to the attraction between them.If I have to say one thing against it, it would be that the last quarter was very busy and so I almost missed Gareth and Olivia agreeing to marry. Also the ending seemed rather abrupt.I am definitely keen to read the next book, but in the mean time I will read No Proper Lady. I didn't realise it was a series! less
