review 1: I was caught up in the book which is a good thing but I'm not so sure whether or not I was caught up due to outrage. The idea that the lead character of the book feels he and his football teammates are singled out for dangerous assignments any more than the normal GI enraged me. Having had a father wounded twice in WWII I found the authors premise quite off-base. We are reading about his "hero" who is having an affair with the wife of a soldier in the thick of battle, who bemoans every assignment he's given that puts him where the action is, and then the ending finds him sent home while the war is still raging to "be safe"?? Sorry - this book was a total letdown and I will not buy this author again
review 2: 3.5 stars. This book started out really strong but
... morethe latter half of the book just let me down. Without giving anything away I thought that the plot copped out a bit and was too predictable. I do love historical fiction though and it was interesting reading about different facets of the war. I didn't realize until the end how much of the book was based on true stories. That said, there was also a lack of character and plot development having to do with certain key scenes. Good book but can't say it would be a top recommendation. less
