review 1: Doig is a good writer, but I don't feel this is one of his best. His dry humor sometimes lightens the mood of this book -- it would be better as a serious tale. It had a Hollywood happy ending that I did not like. Still, if you have an interest in Butte Montana, the Wobblies, and the Anaconda Copper Mining Company, this makes for an interesting read. I was unaware of much of that history and it makes me want to revisit Butte.
review 2: Ten years after Morrie Morgan was teaching school in “The Whistling Season” we find him in Butte, Montana, home of the giant Anaconda Copper Mine, trying to find a place to settle down. He lives in a boarding house run by Grace Faraday, along with two Welsh miners, Hoop and Griff. When the town librarian, a former ranche... morer, recognizes a fellow book lover in Morrie, a job opens up as a jack-of-all trades at the library. There he meets Rabrab, a young woman who had been his student ten years before, and becomes interested in the miners who are objecting to working conditions in the copper mines. Morrie seems larger than life, a man who can do anything and who always charms people along the way. I’m eager to find out what happens to Morrie next. less
