review 1: Fairly long but well written. Story about mostly a year in a life of a boy and his relationship with his father and friend and how he thinks about the world, told in episodes. It'd be interesting to hear the author say how and why he chose to include some events (e.g., the baseball game) and how they fit into the overall narrative. Glad to find a new (to me) author. I'll definitely read some others.
review 2: This is a wonderful, gentle coming of age story with plenty of twists to keep the reader interested without. I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. As usual in his writing, Ivan Doig makes Montana a character as well with his mix of description of the land and its beauty and terror. He throws in a bit of history that is always entertaining. Characters ar
... moree well developed and the first person narrator is delightful. I would have given it 4 stars but it was a bit slow in getting going. less
