Morrie Morgan
review 1: This is the third book featuring Morrie Morgan. While I still think the first one, The Whistling Season, is the best, I liked this one better than the second (which is still excellent). Doig is a skilled writer: his characters are compelling and his plots original and clever. All three books are set in Montana in the early part of the 20th century, and they evoke a lost era beautifully. The plot of this book focuses on the battle between labor and big business--the greedy owners of the world's largest copper mine and the miners they use up without paying adequate compensation.
review 2: I like Ivan Doig a lot, but this wasn't one of his best. In this book we get to check in again with Morrie Morgan from "The Whistling Season" (best of the three) and "Work
... more Song." Morrie has returned to Butte, Montana after a year of honeymoon travel. The miners of Butte are still struggling with the Anaconda Copper Mining Company over wages and safety and Morrie quickly gets entangled in their cause. As usual that is not the only trouble that catches up with him and the story proceeds in a slightly cartoonish fashion. However, even a "B" novel from Doig can be a fun read, and I am not sorry I spent a little time with it. less

It's a sequel to an earlier book and I liked it. Butte, Montana and the Anaconda copper mine.

Returned to library to avoid late fee. Adding it back on as a hold request. (Jan 16)
