review 1: I jumped to the middle of this series by starting with Deadly Stakes because a friend loaned me the book after I told her I went to hear J.A. Jance talk at my library. Jance is a character just as rich as the ones she creates in her stories. There are several things that make for a good mystery series for me, a simple/clean style of writing, characters I care to spend the next week with, and a crime I can't figure out in the first 100 pages. Jance delivers. Ali Reynolds is a fresh take on female detectives, first off because she's not actually a detective. She just has a knack for it. Second, she's a grandmother! She has awesome people in her life who reflect how awesome of a person she is. It's refreshing that she's not messed up and sabotaging her happiness at every turn... more. The mystery was complicated enough I enjoyed the way Jance (and Ali) peeled away the layers. There's some action and suspense and a tiny bit of romance (I like a whole lot of romance). I plan to buddy read the first book in the series with my mom. We have the books lined up. Good times.
review 2: Ali Reynolds is hired by Lynn Martinson’s mother to investigate the charges of murder against Lynn and her boyfriend. Ali vaguely remembers Lynn from a prior case and agrees to help. Before long, Ali and those in her orbit are whirled into a crackerjack of a case that started with a high-school boy finding a body in the desert. I like Ali – she is strong and smart. She can take care of herself, but surrounds herself with good people who can help her. Good read. less

Very quick read....kept me on my toes. Once the story was established, it became very fast paced

Jance can hold you in suspence, even though a little thought can figure out the killer.
