review 1: This is the second book that I read in this series both I got at a flea market. It was not a book that I couldn't put down. Ali Reynolds is a rich woman who got her money because her husband died the day prior to their pending divorce. She is an aging ex-anchorwoman on TV and beautiful. So what is the next career she chose? To be an officer, of course, what rich, beautiful and intelligent woman would choose to be anything else - especially when you have a sweetie is a security guru. His employees hack into all kinds of information on line to help Ali(who was furloughed her 1st day out of the academy due to budget cuts) solve her dilemma and help the active cops solve their case. Is that legal?OK, so I didn't find the story very plausible, but it wasn't horr... moreible.
review 2: Compared to some of the other authors I read J. A. Jance has a tendency to be "mystery lite", but I like all of the series that she writes. Ali Reynolds has unceremoniously been axed in her profession as a News personality (book1). After this, she becomes involved in crime solving/law enforcement. In this book she finishes the police academy just in time for budget cuts. A friend from her past comes looking for help and chaos ensues. There's quite a bit going on in this book much of it revolving around Ali but not necessarily involving Ali. She pieces the puzzle together by enlisting help from friends and some actual law enforcement officers... All in somewhat unbelievable ways.All that said, it is still a fun, quick, interesting mystery and I will continue to read her books... less
