review 1: My 7-year-old read this book to me, and we both loved it. It delivers on everything a Scholastic Branches illustrated early chapter book should offer and more. Yes, it has easy to read text, fun illustrations on each page and an exciting plot. What it also has is some of the best writing I have ever heard from an early reader. For your consideration, Exhibit A: “The air outside was like ice. Orange and red leaves whipped across the ground. Sam shoved his hands into his pockets. He could see his breath. It looked like little ghosts were dancing through the air in front of him.” The author doesn’t just zoom around from one exciting moment to the next. He takes his time to encourage young readers to read with their senses. He sets the eerie scene with a touch of omin... moreous foreboding. Now consider Exhibit B: “Mr. Nekobi slowly got to his feet. He was out of breath, too. His face looked like a piece of paper that someone had balled up and tried to flatten again. He stared at Sam. His eyes were small and gray. A chill went up Sam’s spine.” How great is that description of Mr. Nekobi’s face?Fine, I know it’s not Shakespeare. But after listening to enough early chapter book series read to you by 5- through 8-year-olds, you start to appreciate the subtle qualities that make some of them better than others. I dare you to listen to a few of those Rainbow Magic books. Every…single…book…is the same. And there are more than 150 of them. (Thank goodness my now 11-year-old daughter outgrew them faster than Scholastic could publish them.) The Eerie Elementary series is a breath of fresh air by comparison. My 7-year-old loved this first book so much that he has already started reading book #2 “The Locker Ate Lucy!” to me.New readers looking for an exciting and slightly spooky (perfect for Halloween) early chapter book and parent listeners hoping for more than the same old formulaic storyline might want to give this series a try. Two thumbs up.
review 2: Sam Graves is not sure about his new position as Eerie Elementary School’s Hall Monitor, especially after the school attacks him on the first day of the job. The school is alive and hungry for students. Sam must be combat ready to save his friends when the school attacks. New chapter book readers will enjoy this creepy story about friendship. Chapters are less than ten pages and most pages contain vivid black and white illustrations. Illustrations emphasize the story line and enhance the creepiness factor. The five end of the book reading comprehension questions are an added bonus. less
