review 1: Such a fantastic book!!! I was always enthralled by it. Tommy I think was a great character, as well as Aunty Love. When James and Matilda started sort of falling in love, it never worked for me. I always knew sort of that James would never be with Matilda. I just never felt anything with him. I always thought Tommy was the perfect boyfriend/husband. Anyway, I really loved the book a lot. 5 stars definitely!
review 2: Matilda travels to the bush to find her father after her mother dies. They go on the road together, but before they can travel far, they are bailed up by the local squatter with 3 troopers, who accuse him of stealing a sheep. As he tries to escape, he is drowned, leaving Matilda orphaned, but owner of a small property, which she refuses to relin... morequish to Mr Drinkwater, the squatter. She survives and prospers on the land with the help of various locals who knew her father, and with the help of an old aboriginal woman. The novel cover the years of Federation, the Boer War and the First World War. I felt that some aspects of the plot were a bit far fetched, such as the squatter who turns out to be related to Matilda. Otherwise an enjoyable read that gives a good sense of feeling about Australia. less
