review 1: I started these books about two years ago while sick in bed, and searching through Amazon for something to read after reading the Hunger Games books, and wanting to find a book that would leave the same feeling that an epic series would leave. And while this author is self published, I thought "Hey, why not give it a try anyway, its cheap." And I was so pleasantly surprised that it did leave that feeling with me. Sammy is a character, who I would have related to as a teen, and his friends and other characters are not interchangeable, very developed. The writing is excellent, and while I think the first book is the best, the following ones are very good too. It's like the pages turn themselves honestly. Anyway, As I was in bed for about a week or so, I read those two first... more books (the only ones that were published at the time) in a matter of days. The thought matter in the book, like the anomalies, are extremely creative and interesting. And while the books is sci-fi, it also have enough romance in it for any girls out there who aren't really into sc fi. Anyone who liked the Hunger Games, or The Giver series by Lois Lowry, would definitely enjoy this book and the sequels.
review 2: 3.5Great ideas. Okay characters. Amazing and how-dare-end-with-a-cliff-hanger ending.MC is average. Yet, readers are constantly being told he is the best and smartest and liked by everyone. I can't see why. He's not super nice, and he's kinda slow-witted when it comes to people (despite his "genius" powers). He lies a lot and expects it to win him friends. And his girlfriend is a jerk and self-centered. She hates when anyone is better than she is, and she casually befriends/dumps people based on her moods.Pacing is decent. There is a lot of training an not much danger for 3/4 of the book, but I still enjoyed it. The training is entertaining. There were several times when characters suddenly knew something they hadn't known before. When did the other students find out about anomaly 9? I must have missed it. I thought it would be a bigger deal.I like that there is slang for this world. The setting is well-designed/plan. less
