review 1: I am enjoying Maisie as I read the books. There are plenty of secrets that Maisie must keep. Maisie is working with the Secret Service and is teaching at The College Of St Francis, school established to bring about PEACE. There are worries that the Nazi party is there. While Maisie is present the Dean is MURDER.Billie is working to Sandra find out why her husband died. James Compton is in Canada. All the characters continue to grow.
review 2: {library audiobook, plot summary elsewhere]These reviews are about how much I enjoyed the book, and advice as to how much you might enjoy it. So, on reflection I gave it a 5 for context."Lesson" has all the standard Winspear business, upstairs downstairs and all that, but the political setting gives this series installment
... more more depth. It's the view from Britain about the rise of Hitler in Germany, the sympathy for Naziism in the British upper classes and government and the conflict of pacifism with the rise of the new threat. The backstory for Maisie, and most English citizens, is the horror the the first world war, but there's little thought to how that WWI was a consequence of the fight of elites for control of Europe and Africa, with no social context, and the possibility of progressive opposition to that war. [Unlike WW II, which was mostly about democracy v. fascism.]So it's not surprising that there should be a strong pacifist streak in Britain, even in the face of rising Nazi power in Germany. There would be a mixture of progressives and Facists opposing confrontation with Germany. Meanwhile, the upper classes of Britain flirted with Nazism and feared socialism and the Soviet Union. In "Lesson," the British secret service winks at Nazis sympathetic organizations and fears Bolsheviks. less
