review 1: 3.5 stars. This book raises some significant issues about how one might wish to live their life, given the opportunity. For most this would be a satisfying career, a happy family, and a rewarding relationship with a spouse or partner. This is difficult and would have been especially so for women in the 1930s. It is still a problem today. While there is a connection between Maisie's sometimes smothering efforts to help people and the plot, I thought this would have been a better book if the author had made a connection in the plot to the larger question as well.

... moreining 2/3 was Maisie realizing she is too regimented and controlling, something the rest of us realized in book one. I hope this is working towards an ultimate end game for Winspear instead of drawing out a series that should have ended. less

A mystery with heart, typical of Winspear, who is an author with a lot of heart. Loved it!
