review 1: I enjoyed the Maisie Dobbs series by this author, which took place after WW! and into the 1920s -- in contrast, this book traces the lives of Kezea, her best friend Thea and Thea's brother Tom, who marries Kezie and starts a wonderful life with her on the family farm. All too soon the first World War sweeps away all that they had planned, and Tom and his young wife correspond through the imagined dinners that she invents and describes to him as if she were creating them for him to taste. The book's title is poignant -- the letters that are sent back and forth are full of loving lies, as neither wants to distress the other with the reality of the changed world in which they are struggling. A loving, insightful tale.
review 2: I enjoy everything this author wr
... moreites, but found this one to be special. She convinces the reader to fall in love with this English couple, and the land they farm, and their extended friends and family, even though we all know that war is coming, and with it, certain death. The juxtaposition of life/love and the horrors of war is quietly, beautifully done, and I dare you to finish it without a great surge of emotion. Lovely! less

I liked this book but thought the book ended abruptly. I have a lot of unanswered questions.

Maybe 2.5. I really enjoyed the first half of the book but then it fell apart.
