review 1: This was definitely one of the more business-specific books I've ever read. Because of that, I think some of the application may have been lost on me. However, I read it because I wanted to track the stages of failed great businesses to see how it could speak to the possibility of great churches and ministries falling. My church's history is that in the last 10 years we've shrunk in every way possible. Quite frankly, we're the mighty that have fallen. So I wanted to read this book to see if it could shed light on how that happened, where we may be at in the stages, and what we could do to reverse things. The 5 stages were the most useful tool in this book, and unfortunately they could be reduced to a simple blog entry. Because of that I really felt like I had to speed read t... morehis book because the basic message was basic and not deserving of a lengthy in-depth read. Also, it was a little light on how-to's to reverse the trend if you find yourself in any of the 5 stages.I'm not sure what Collins' full goal was. I think it was revelation of a pattern, but I wish it would have been to reveal a pattern so that businesses could not only avoid it but get out of it. Giving practical advice on how to reverse the stages at each of the 5 stages would have been incredibly helpful. As it was, this book was just interesting, and unfortunately, a bit less instructive and helpful.
review 2: I enjoyed this book quite a lot and found quite a few points which will be relevant to discuss with both my team and management. And, despite its doom and gloom title, there is a hopefulness that even if you have made nearly a complete disaster of your company, it IS possible to bring it back. I listened to the audio version of this book and I can say that having Jim Collins read the book made it even better-- it felt more like I was sitting in on a lecture of his as he really brought his words to life. The only drawback is the one that many business books suffer from-- a lack of deep details on any one of the companies examined-- though it seems clear that the author and associates did do their homework in their analysis from the details that are provided. I liked this one so much in audio that I will go ahead and purchase it in hard copy as well. less
