review 1: Growing a small business is hard. I have learned a lot this past year about growth and expenses and management - lessons I probably should have learned in graduate school if I had gone for business instead of math. Fortunately I have Professor Collins and his shit-ton of research to help me out. I do mean shit-ton. This book is dense with analysis. I don't know how much of it applies to me and my small enterprise. I mean I'm not a Zenith or Motorola, just a little window cleaning company with a handful of people. But it's interesting. Here's the Decline: Hubris, Undisciplined Pursuit, Denial, Gasping for Salvation, Capitulation. These are the lessons of decline for a huge business and for an individual. We've all been there - well maybe not all of us, there are sm... morearter people than me. There are others who don't make the same mistakes. But I'm a guy who learns the hard way and so this isn't so much learning as "Aha, that's what I did wrong." Good thing I don't often make the same mistakes twice. Or at least I tell people I don't make the same mistakes twice. I hope it's true. Don't be unsustainable. That's the big lesson. Have a sustainability plan before each decision. Enjoy.
review 2: Another excellent book from Jim Collins, which explores the five stages of decline and why businesses decline. This book is an essential must read for any business owner and business culture, because it will help people recognize why businesses fail and what can be done to change course and get the business back on track. Collins maps out each stage and provides examples of how each company went into each stage. The appendices provide further insights that are useful for the business owner. As a business coach, I found this book to be very helpful for me in recognizing where my clients are in these stages, as well as what can d to help them turn their business about and make it successful. less
