review 1: 1st part of the trilogy was the 1000 days before JFK's skull explosion. 2nd part was focused on his brother and M.L.King. This final part, 15 years (of waiting) later is about 68 to 72, Hawaii and the DR, the black panthers, communism, and as always, the shadows of Hoover, the maffia, Howard Hughes, etc etcIt's fast, uberviolent, dostoievskian, tres complex, it's about the times when America lost its innocence - if there ever was one - it's about redemption and closure and as usual with Ellroy, it's about "cherchez la femme", women, who, for the 1st time are not only second role lovers but also puppet masters of the violent men that defined their era. It depicts the best female character in Ellroy's work ever. It also is arguably the best (crime) novel I've ever read. One ... moreof those books that sadly make you wonder what to read next since everything will taste like papier-mâché after that. Need a 6 stars option. Buy the f- thing without a single second thought.
review 2: (3.2) Ellroy's The Led Zeppelin of crime fiction. The Bristle headed, wire rimmed glass, hitler stached author appeared voodoo like on my tv set late one night during graduate school. His 2 thermos of coffee, meth inspired patter and patois were spellbinding. "I have to read this guy's books," I thought. And I have. The LA tetralogy is spun gold and gut punched w/revelatory styling and moral ambivalence. The true rock band of great writers would have Stephen King on the bass, George RRMartin on the axe, Larry McMurtry hitting the skins, Tom Clancy on the keyboard, and Ellroy blazing out lightning slang a la a Henry Rollins, and The Storytellers would be its name. less
