review 1: I enjoyed Rain Gods but not as much as James Lee Burke's Robicheaux books. It is really well written so i got to wondering why i didn't enjoy it so much. I think it is because there is no single character you could say the book has as a central character, and after reading the Robicheaux series and liking the Robicheaux character and what he does so much, I was expecting the story to revolve around an equally obvious and likeable but in a different sort of way character. It was reading that it was #1 in the Hackberry Holland series that built up my expectation of a big central role for Holland; in the end he shared it with a few others. There were 3 or 4 characters it could be said the story revolved around. All intriguing in different ways and with very well developed an... mored clear personalities. Have just started the next in the Hackberry Holland series and am looking forward to seeing how it goes.
review 2: The previous books by Burke that I’ve read, have featured Louisiana detective Dave Robicheaux. RAIN GODS has a different protaganist and locale featuring Texas sheriff Hackberry Holland, an old lawman with a strong moral code who is haunted by his experiences as a POW. An anonymous phone call leads Holland to the site of an execution style murder, where the bodies of nine young Asian women lie in a shallow grave. The sheriff is determined to bring whoever is responsible to justice. His style is straightforward, but like a good poker player he keeps his cards close to his vest.Burke is a virtuoso at his craft. If you are an enthusiast of the mystery-thriller genre and have not read him, you are definitely missing out. Readers who dismiss mysteries as not literary need only peruse a few pages to see that this is not necessarily so. This novel is a dark masterpiece, with ideas and images that roll into your brain like a Texas thunderstorm. less
