review 1: James Lee Burke’s heroes--and plenty of his ancillary characters, too--are among the most prickly people on the planet. They offend easily, harshly judge other people’s words & behavior, and they hew to an inscrutable code of conduct that sometimes leads to the darkest kinds of violence. Every conversation is “like trying to digest carpet tacks” (p323). FEAST DAY OF FOOLS is set in an almost surreal West Texas border county, described as “a piece of moonscape where improbable people live and lunatics can hide in plain sight” (p245). Despite dropping in the Al Qaeda brand name from time to time, the novel doesn’t really offer a mystery or much plot at all to think about. A rogue’s gallery of grotesques stalks each other across the desert and back & forth acr... moreoss the invisible line between two nations, while elderly Sheriff Hackberry Holland waits to see which of several outlandish murderers--demented, bad-looking guys with names like Krill, Negrito and Preacher Jack--he’ll have to put in the morgue instead of the jailhouse. As an ambivalent fan of James Lee Burke, I’m not surprised or offended by the monstrous crimes and hideous personalities in FEAST DAY OF FOOLS, but the accretion of horrors DOES become oppressive after a while. Recommend reading it during sunny weather.
review 2: Liked Feast Day of fools a lot. I'd read Rain Gods first and felt there was no 'central' character and therefore found it difficult to know where the story was going. With Feast Day though it was clear from the outset who was who and the story's progress a lot clearer. Towards the end it was unputdownable for me and I ended up really enjoying it. I also liked the fact that one of the storylines was left open - leaving a bit for the reader to think about and wonder what might be coming next with certain characters! less
