review 1: When the great American boxer Jack Dempsey was 45 and broke, he fought a wrestler named Cowboy Luttrell. You can watch this sordid spectacle on Youtube. Old men fighting is unedifying, even when the old man is Dempsey. In this novel men I have come to love through James Lee Burke's peerless writing fight physically. They fought in Vietnam, so they must be 60 years old and their brawling in this story is squalid and pathetic.Maybe that's the writer's intention. He's complex and sometimes conflicted and he doesn't shirk paradox in his characters. But the result here is sad. I can't help feeling that Dave Robicheaux (if not Clete Purcell) deserves a more dignified late middle-age.
review 2: This was my first Dave Robicheaux story outside of New Iberia and New Orle
... moreans. I was skeptical at first wondering how old Dave and Cletus Purcel would stumble upon yet another great crime-solving predicament, particularly in Montana, but yes, they did!!! Filled with the usual despicable characters and loaded with the expected twists and turns, this Burke mystery satisfies like all the rest. And I ended up enjoying the change of venue afterall. less

Lots of characters and twist. Entertaining. Could have used a stronger finish scene.
