review 1: In James Lee Burkes' The Glass Rainbow, buddy characters Dave Robicheaux and Clete Purcells attempt to make New Iberia safe, heal themselves, and protect Dave's daughter and wife. The pull of the book is the loyalty between Dave and Clete, the raw pain that Burke dares to analyze. Burke has a way of drawing this reader into real peril. At the end of the book I didn't know wheher Dave and Clete were dead or alive, We ended in a storm of confusion. The glass rainbow of shildhood fulfillment seemed remote--like Gatsby's light across the bay.
review 2: Excellent story - very complex. Burke once again does a fantastic job of depicting the Louisiana bayous. His poetic descriptions of the area actually make me feel like I'm there - the smells and sounds are so we
... morell described. He is so good at displaying the essence of evil in his characters. I can almost feel my skin crawl when some of them enter the scene. He balances that feeling with the essential goodness of Robicheaux and Cletus. less
