review 1: James Sturm is one of my favorite artists. His simple style, sharp juxtaposition of light and shadow, and unsettling use of space allow his drawings to tell a story far better than his uneven writing ever could. The writing, as in some of Sturm's other work, does end up being the major weakness of Market Day. It's hard to develop much sympathy for the main character's problems, something a reader needs in the sad, world-weary, heavy allegory of Market Day. The book also seems to end suddenly and with little warning. I unfortunately left feeling the conclusion was lazy and unfinished rather than provocatively open-ended. Despite the drawbacks Market Day is still a good read. I found far more to like about the book than not, and I'm certain that with another read throu... moregh I'll pick up on more of the symbolism and subtlety hidden in Sturm's incredible artwork.
review 2: This book is wonderful. A compact story with glorious art. Seeing the world through the eyes of carpet maker was a revelation that worked quite well with the artwork. The reader is exposed to both the creative energy of an artist and the pride of creation of an artisan. Watching these two elements collide with the impeding industrialization of the world was breathtaking.For those readers who did not like how abruptly the book ends try to figure out how you would have ended it. I also felt abandoned at the end, but had no idea what should come next. What resolution would alter the conflict between industry and art? Does he leave his family? Does he keep making rugs? What does it matter? I felt the points were made during the day (the "Market Day") and expanding much beyond where the book ends would only cheapen the message. less
