Inspector Kari Vaara
review 1: I was sadly disappointed by this third Kari Vaara novel. I adored Snow Angels and Lucifer's Tears, but this one just fell flat for me. To be fair, I will state that I listened to the first two on audio and read this one, so it was a different experience. However, I just could not get into this. If I had read this as a stand-alone, or had not read the first two novels in the series, I may not have finished. It started out strong, Kari has a new baby, has some medical issues taken care of, reconnects with his brother. After that, however, I felt it was somewhat disjointed account of a messed up group of black ops guys amassing all kinds of weapons and other equipment, stealing drugs and money, killing.....lots of violence. I won't give more detail for risk of spoilers... more, but I just did not enjoy the story, I didn't care for Kari in this book, and it took me weeks to complete this book. I did appreciate learning about race relations in Finland. I am sure I will read the next in the series given my enjoyment of the previous books.
review 2: This book takes Inspector Vaara into very dark places, and is more of a thriller/action/political story than a police procedural. Most of the characters are repulsive and even the people we are rooting for have been acting in very nasty, brutal and hateful ways. So I really didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would. It's not a function of the writing, but the dark and violent nature of the story, and the hate-filled rhetoric that so many of the characters espouse. Not sure whether I will continue reading this series. less

Racist mystery based on fact; not a pleasant read. Conclusion is too compressed for my taste.

Pretty much, if you like The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo series, then get hooked on this.
