review 1: An Inspector Vaara novel; #2 in this series of 4—just as spell binding as the 1st, this time with lots of S&M, involving eventually some high level characters. In the 1st book, Vaara’s wife was expecting twins but we learn these were lost prior to viability. At the end of this book a daughter is born (amidst a whole lot of S&M and other stories), then Vaara’s migraines are noted to be caused by a brain tumor (Vaara’s estranged brother is the treating Neurologist, naturally). To be honest, I actually “teared up” with this discovery, then went “wait a minute, there are 2-more books” so I am assuming Vaara lives a bit longer…, intriguing author is all I am saying; see also #48/2013; 2011 Berea Library hardback, 323 pgs.; read Sept.‘13/#48, while moving ... moreMLB to her 1st home in NC.
review 2: I loved the first book in the series, Snow Angels. This second installment moves us from the very atmospheric high Arctic to Helsinki. While Helsinki is interesting, it lack a bit of the atmosphere of the first book. This is a minor flaw, however. The protagonist, Kari Vaara, is a person who dislikes most people including himself, with the one exception that he adores his American wife who is adapting to Finnish life. The story contains a complex series of intertwined cases that were at times a bit over the top. However, still an excellent read for what is becoming a crowded field - namely Scandanavian/Arctic Noir. less
