review 1: There is a lot to like about this book: fast moving plot, the right amount of character development, and interesting descriptions of Finnish life. But the way the allegedly pro detective jumped to conclusions drove me insane! No sooner would he hear that two people know each other than he would concoct a complex explanation for how they slept together and plotted a murder or something, based on basically Nothing! And he was wrong most of the time. And to make matters worse, as soon as he had one of these ideas he would share it with a victims family, or even worse, the media! Huh? I really liked a lot of things about this book but this one reoccurring issue drive me insane. Totally bizarre and implausible! And then, in one final act of implausibility, the protagonist gets ... moreshot through his cheek, loses a bunch of teeth, and still manages to punch a guy and carry on a conversation for a number of pages....ok.....
review 2: As an American ex-pat living in Finland, this book had me nodding my head quite a bit. I really enjoyed the writing style; it grabbed me from the start and took me through rather quickly. There were a few small parts of the story that didn't sit well with me. I'm hoping to see less of those things in future books. I debated whether to give this 3 or 4 stars because of those parts I didn't think worked well, but went with a 4 as I thought the storytelling was very good and his presentation of the culture and the cultural alienation so realistic. less
