Inspector Kari Vaara
review 1: While there is too much, for me, violence and graphic action, the story line is compelling and I can't wait to get the next book. Kari Vaara, a detective in Finland, is being set up by his boss. Why? He is also experiencing constant headaches, trying to get along with his new partner, and be supportive to his wife, pregnant with their first child. She is American, miscarried her last pregnancy, and not always dealing well with the differences between American and Finnish cultures. Really interesting.
review 2: The follow up to Snow Angels was just as hard hitting. Poor Kari, while his life IS difficult he certainly doesn't make it any easier. Kate is pregnant again, they are living now in the "metropolis" of Helsinki, she has a job at the most prestigious
... moreand historic Kamp hotel, while he is on the night shift of the Murder Squad saddled with an unstable and pretty creepy partner. Kate's family is in town to be with her at the birth of their daughter and the family relations are not as happy as Kate remembered. Kate feels guilty and Kari is upset that her family is not supportive of her and judgmental of him. Kari has also been suffering terrible migraines since the Sufia Elmi case but puts it off to stress. Kate is anxious about her pregnancy, she miscarried the twins and carries the guilt heavily, she also has preeclampsia and is hesitant to take the traditional amount of Finnish maternity leave... Needless to say things get messy. Kari is involved in an incident which leads to a school shooting. He is also asked to investigate a war hero for Nazi collusion, which puts him in a very difficult position when he realizes that his Grandfather worked at the same camp where the crime less
