review 1: I think the title is a little misleading. The author does write essays on several of the most popular books of the twentieth century, but I don't think he every arrives at a formula for writing a hit novel. In addition, I was supposed to have read all the books on the list. Some of them are on my to-read list, but i don't know that I will ever try to get through Gone With The Wind. I didn't really love the movie. Anyway. On to the next.
review 2: This book presents an interesting take on 12 of the bestselling novels of the 20th century by identifying 12 themes (hot buttons) within each novel. Robert Langdon may find that fascinating but is not the holy grail of literature. The work is an accumulation of discussion and notes from Hall’s graduate course i
... moren popular literature. I would recommend the book as it may stimulate your thinking about what and why you read what you read. There is a section of 17 questions to reflect on the themes and plots of Hall’s list of 12 popular novels. In addition each novel has a plot summary to refresh your memory of each novel. I must confess I did not read all 12 novels on the list. I was surprised to learn that some of Hall’s graduate students have developed very successful writing careers. Hall writes the enjoyable Thorn series that is set in the Florida Keys. less
