review 1: When I first set the rules for this challenge I decided I was going to read every book I owned that I had never finished and start them again from the beginning. But seeing this one coming up on my list made me start dreading my challenge and having thoughts of scrapping the entire thing altogether until it occurred to me that it was my challenge dammit and I could make and change whatever I wanted about it whenever I wanted. So it is because of reading more than 50 pages of this book sometime in the last few years and disliking it so much (I remember there was some big plot reveal that made me feel incredibly uncomfortable and icky) that I have now employed Nancy Pearls' 50 page rule and decided with much relief that The Middlesteins and I are never ever ever getting ba... moreck together!
review 2: The Middlesteins are a normal Jewish family that lives in the Chicago suburbs. One day, after more than thirty years of marriage, Richard announces that he wants a divorce. He tells his children that he has been miserable for years and that Edie is trying to eat herself to death. She has always had a fascination/addiction to food. Son Benny just wants everyone to be happy but his controlling wife wants to save Edie and tries to make her exercise. Daughter Robin is furious at her father and takes her mother's side. She learns how her mother has been helping a Chinese restaurant and fallen in love with the owner. This novel was okay but I probably won't read any more books by this author. less

each chapter is presented from point of view of one of the characters - quite fun for the reader

decent story about a family but nothing particularly stands out about it.

Reminded me of Olive Kitteridge, but liked Olive better.
