review 1: This book was more than a story of an orphan boy. In fact, William was never truly an orphan, though he had the dream orphans do; to get a family. He saw lives in his friends that he would never want and dreamed of a life that he thought he should have gotten. Willow was thrust into a life she didn't want because her mother made choices just as Liu Song did, and for the same reason: the welfare of her child. This book, in the midst of the depression, portrays many views: poverty, discrimination, prejudice and customs. Willow gave up a lot many times, but in the end, gave up something to get what she truly wanted.
review 2: A great read. I picked this up because I so enjoyed Jamie Ford's first book Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and I wasn't disappointe
... mored. The story of Liu - Willow and her son William who she's been forced to abandon in a Seattle Orphanage. The story begins with William recognising his mother in a movie and tracking her down when she visits Seattle on a promotional tour. It the then goes back to Willow's life and how she came to have William, be forced to abandon him and become a movie star. Before I read this, it had never occured to me that non-black American minorities were also invisible in mainstream life, prevented from marrying outside their racial background and in danger of losing citizenship if they were a woman who chose to marry someone from the 'old country' who wasn't a US citizen, they were sidelined and marginalised in the extreme. To allintents and purposes they were invisible to anyone from outside their cultural background unless they had something to exploit like Willow's exceptional voice. I enjoyed the short stay wthin the overall story of William's friend Charlotte and her fierce determination not to be given back to her father, despite being blind in 1930's America and effectively having no say over her own life. She made her own decision the outcome of which was shocking, but it was her choice.Well worth your time to read this and looking forward already to Jamie Ford's next book. less

I don't mean to be hard hearted but the author really let us know that this lady was LONELY!

Didn't like it as well as Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, but I did enjoy it.

heart-wrenching. But the happy ending makes it all worth it. 3.5 stars.
