review 1: I'm not a speed reader but I devoured this in a day. It's such a fun, fantastical joyride through historical England. The plot, while ridiculous on paper is fleshed out so well by Jane Feather that it works well and keeps you engaged right through. I found Lord Blackwater a little misogynistic at times and some of his actions are perilously close to assault, but Clarissa is a strong, assertive, independent heroine who holds her ground well. Apart from the rapey undertones, this is what good romance writing looks like.
review 2: In order to save her brother Clarissa Astley goes to London to find him, hides out in a whorehouse and becomes mistress to the Earl of Blackwater. Jasper, the Earl of Blackwater, knows nothing of Clarissa's true background but knows tha
... moret she hides many secrets especially when she brings in a street urchin to the house on Half Moon Street where he has taken her to live. But Jasper isn't going to push her too hard because he has to fool his grandfather, a lecherous old man, who has decreed that his grandsons must find a "fallen woman" and redeem her through marriage in order to gain their inheritance. This is an interesting story plot, starting from an unlikely point, the seedier side of London. I know author's have little control over their titles; this title has little to do with the actual story. less
