review 1: Giving 5 stars for the whole trilogy. I bought the 2nd and 3rd books in the series (the Man in the Wooden Hat and Last Friends, respectively) in London in Hatchards book shop. Founded in 1797, It is the oldest the book shop in London ( now in two locations) and it is a delight for browsing and shopping. And Gardam is a delight to read-- she can be very funny and poignant. Look up quotes by Gardam on Goodreads and you'll get a sense of her humor.
review 2: Such a first rate and touching trilogy. Last Friends is the conclusion and it holds up to the two previous Old Filth (my favorite) and The Man in the Wooden Hat. This is valedictory and, so, sad reading but Gardem gives the reader a fine ending of reconciliation, companionship and love. I was reminded of two... more similar endings - Anita Brookner's Lewis Percy and Nancy Reisman's The First Desire. Why shouldn't one be happy after all? less
