review 1: What the book is about: This is a story of a ‘modern family’ where you have a second wife, Andi, dealing with her infertility, her marriage, and the angry teenage daughter, Emily, of her husband, Ethan, who gets caught in the middle of two of the women he loves the most in life. What I liked: Jane’s writing style is great, even if the story line was not really my cup of tea, she manages to hook you up from the start with the reality of her characters, and even if the story by itself is not super exciting she puts enough tension in it to make you want to turn page after page. What I did not like: At about half, the book becomes such a pool of darkness I was upset; it is a vortex of negativity repulsive and compelling at the same time. The life of the teenage daughter di... moresgusted me so much I wanted to close the book, or shut off the e-reader, for good. It was too dark, and frighteningly believable. I hope teenagers don’t really live like that, and behave so recklessly with no respect for themselves and their bodies. It was disturbing I think, not a light read for sure. You have alcoholism, drugs, emotional abuse. It is very hard to empathize with Emily for most of the book. The author gives you Andi’s perspective first, for about a third of the book, and by the time she moves into Emily’s you already hate her. Even by writing about Emily in the first person, the rest of the book is in third person, she didn’t manage to make me sympathize with her.
review 2: Emily and her stepmother Andi mix like oil and water. Emily is rebellious and spoiled, not disciplined properly by her father Ethan, who blames himself for the divorce and Emily's subsequent anger. During the first part of the book, I found myself being extremely angry and frustrated by Emily's behavior. I also wanted to scream at her father Ethan, for always giving in to her tantrums. Around the middle of the book, the author began to speak from Emily's voice, which gave me a whole new perspective and understanding about her character. This is not to say I condoned her behavior, but at least I could understand where she was coming from. This was an excellent book, which examined the complex family dynamics of divorce, blended families, addictions, adoption, and maladaptive behaviors. By the time I got to the middle, I could hardly put it down. Jane Green has written an excellent book, with lots of drama and emotion. less

Loved this book! A very moving story of a family on the brink of destruction. A step-mother caught up in the emotional tension of a very trying teenage daughter and the helplessness of being able to create the idealistic family she has dreamed of. At times funny, heartwarming and sensitive; at others, heartbreaking and infuriating.....the reader will no doubt recognize and empathize with many of the characters. Jane Green at her best.

Decent story, although at times it seemed the author backtracked when it really wasn't necessary. I also didn't think her English accent, although fun to listen too, fit the story being told in first person by people who lived in California (and were native Californians). Definitely not a book for someone to pick up who doesn't like swearing ... there were several scenes that included a lot of vulgar language.
