review 1: I liked this story, but I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because you figure out a little too quickly the link between the two main characters, Sylvie and Maggie. The way that the connection is discovered is a little too easy as well. The underlying story of how the women deal with the reveal of the secret is interesting, however. It is a very emotional book; it deals with issues of eating disorders, dementia, and trust in marriage. Sylvie and Maggie are very different: Sylvie is creative, in love with her husband, and a good mother; Maggie is mainly concerned with keeping up appearances and her status in the community. Their lives are turned upside down and the story delves into how they deal with all the changes. You see a lot of growth in both women throughout the nov... moreel and you learn how all these changes affect their children. It is an interesting story once the secret is out to the characters and I am happy to say that the second half of the book doesn't feel as contrived and easy to predict as the first half.
review 2: This book was frustrating for me and pretty predictable. We meet Sylvie first and I found her to be a pushover & naive. The way she let her mom treat her and always believed Mark's excuses for why she couldn't reach him, etc. She was constantly going back and forth about her suspicions. And the way they were with each other.....you're the best thing that's ever happened to me, no you are, I love you more, no I love you more. They were worse than teenagers. It made me want to vomit. And with the many talents Sylvie had, why did she take up candle making to get back on her feet? The part of the book that disturbed me the most was when Eve went with a friend to some girls house (can't remember her name) and all the girls were discussing the oral sex "contest". I just kept shaking my head and thinking really? Not sure the need or purpose of that other than it gave Eve & Grace the opportunity to leave. But anything could have been written to give them that opportunity. And not sure about Eve's eating disorder either. It would make sense if it happened after finding out about her step dad but it was introduced way before then, and how or why a mom would just shrug the signs off. Felt that Maggie's introduction came way to late for readers to like or relate to her. This is one of those books that when you finish you think ok why did I even finish that???? less
