review 1: I couldn't make up my mind whether I liked this book or not. Harriet Baxter is an elderly lady writing her memoirs, particularly the history of what happened with a Glaswegian painter, Ned Gillespie. After a chance meeting in the street she becomes friends with him and his family, after some time his youngest daughter mysteriously disappears and is later found dead. Harriet is arrested. In her memoirs we read her version of what happened and it is for us to decide where the truth lies. The sub plot is the life of the elderly Harriet at home and her maid, Sarah. I found the language to be rather flowery and although I wanted to find out what happened was left feeling a little disappointed by it all at the end.
review 2: Set in the 1880's in Scotland and als
... moreo 1933 London, but mostly in Scotland. Starts off at a leisurely pace and is quite deceptive in taking you back to the leisurely place and time of the period. Tells the story of Harriet Baxter who befriends the Gillespie family in Scotland. Ned Gillespie is an artist and Harriet tries to foster his talent. When one of his daugters is kidnapped, we see the family disintegrate. Written in the first person as a memoir type - stylish writing. The more you think about it after you finish it, the more you realise what a deceptively simple tale was told and how gripping it became. Very clever book. less
