review 1: I picked this up from my local library because the title character shares my daughter's name. I am sure glad I did! This is a great story about loss, moving, family, and anxiety. After Elsie's mom dies, her dad moves her to the prairie of Nebraska. This story becomes a love letter to the great state, and a tale of overcoming obstacles. This would be a wonderful book for 2nd-4th grade students.
review 2: This book is known for being Jane Yolen’s 300th book. This book is about a pretty little red head city girl who lives in Boston. Her mother dies and her dad longs for a new scenery so they move out west to Nebraska. Elsie does not want to move but does because she doesn’t want to lose her papa as well. She is resistant to listen to the sound of the prai
... morerie, and stays inside with her bird Timmy. Until one day Timmy gets out and she goes out looking for him, after searching for a while she feels she will never find him. So she sing a sad song, then to her disbelief Timmy sings back to her and then come lands on her head. What drew me into this book was the illustrations, it is not my favorite style of illustrations but they are done so beautifully it caught my eye. This book would be great reading for 4th or 5th grade to talking about moving west. The adjectives used in this book, are great which makes it for upper elementary school reading. This book could also be used to teach students about coping skills and dealing with change in environment. less
