review 1: "I'm Not Her" by: Janet Gurtler, was a great book that helped me better understand myself and the purpose of life as a whole. I'm not sure if that's what Gurtler was trying to achieve in writing this, but it can be interpreted in many different ways. This book wasn't like all other stereotype cliché romance novels. I realized the second I read the first page that I wouldn't be able to set it down. Tess (the main character) is the shy artistic girl that is hidden in the shadows of her sister Kristina's glory. Kristina is your typical athletic, gorgeous, radiant popular girl that everyone aspires to become, or befriend. But when tragedy strikes Tess's family and rids them of their perfect image their whole worlds are changed. Tess struggles with reality, in an epic battle w... moreith her new found popularity, loss of her friend, trouble with boys, and coping with Kristina's fight to maintain her bone cancer. What was different with this story compared to the countless others, is that it breaks down and comprehends that family isn't perfect, and that staying strong through a traumatic experience can hold your love ones together. We were born into a world that fiction has happy endings and reality hits hard and leaves wounds. But this story has ups and downs that not only make you smile, but break your heart. There will be times where you can feel the warmth spread to your cheeks with steamy romance, and tears stream down your face with the struggles and loss of family, friends, and dreams. There are definitely some things I would change, or emphasize, but I enjoyed reading and reflecting about the beauty and the detail Janet Gurtler suppressed in this great read.
review 2: I kept waiting for the book to come to the point. Lots of teenaged Angst, scarey -- to the point of brutal -- medical care, and completely checked out parents made this book a bad read for me. I know all three of those are realities for many people -- please God, not all three at once for anyone! -- but it seemed too much in this book. Add to that a downer of an ending -- no real resolution of any of the troubles in the book combined with a very disappointing outcome of the one thing I was hoping would come out all right for Tess, and I can't recommend it to anyone and strongly caution against it for teens, especially those who are broody or emotionally troubled. less
