review 1: I think that this book is great in early childhood. It is definitly something you can use for the younger classrooms in defining what opposites are and you can create all sorts of activities based off of this book. I love how the backgrounds really detail and identify what your looking for. For instance, the small/larger hippopposite shows a tall building next to the small hippo, and a little animal next to the large hippo. Overall I give this book a high rating because it is very useful within the younger classrooms.
review 2: Picture Book ProjectCategory: ConceptSource: Notable Children's Book ALAA graphic of a hippopotamus explores opposites with young children in this concept book. The book is made of cardboard and invites the reader to turn the pages and e
... morexplore the opposite of words like soft, small, squared, and free. The illustrations are simple and to the point. With only one or two words per page, the illustrations must carry the burden of representing the meaning of the word. The hippo changes size or color, goes riding in a hot air balloon, and even becomes invisible. Children are not distracted by extraneous details. In my classroom I could use this book as a great hook before introducing a thesaurus. The class could come up with other possible opposites the author could have included. Then I would show them the thesaurus and demonstrate how to find words in the book. Students could pair up to make a list of words they would like to include in a letter to the author. The class will vote on the list and I will dictate the letter to Ms. Coat. My youngest daughter really liked this book. Some of the words were a bit of a challenge for her so she still needed help to read it. My favorite "mistake" she made was when the hippopotamus was alone. The opposite was together, but instead of trying to sound it out she called out, "Not alone!" This has been a book she has repeatedly asked me to let her take to bed to read and when it goes back to the library I know she will miss it. less
