review 1: I deeply dislike this run. Mostly I hate the art. I really hate how Bachalo does faces, especially noses. I dislike the lines, I dislike the the colours. Bachalo and Bradshaw doing art together.... ugh. I does nothing for me. I also hate the writing. I've liked some of Aaron's other stuff, but this run is so... so... cliche? It's full of very tired tropes. It actually as one of the tropes I hate the most: mystic pregnancy. And the fact that it's used on one of my favourite characters makes it particularly irksome. Also, I hate how he writes Quentin. Actually, Quire is kind of the embodiment of why I hate this run. It's trying to be a really light-hearted, fun thing that shows daily life at the school. I get it, the book is not supposed to take itself too seriously. But in ... moreorder to achieve this, Aaron has altered a few characters to fit in this light-hearted run, and he makes fun of a few things that are just not funny. Runs like this are part of the reason why the term "Omega Mutant" doesn't mean anything any more. Just... have low expectations.
review 2: I really enjoyed the light tone of this, and it avoids the usual "morass of confusing characters" problem that comes with X-Men comics. It returns to the "school" kind of atmosphere we know and love, with a lot of familiar characters and a few I didn't recognize. I especially love Broo the alien, even though I have no idea what species the Broods are or anything that's happened with them before. This is an introductory set of issues so the plot isn't entirely underway, and I also had trouble parsing the art on many occasions. less
