review 1: Hoo boy, this was pretty awful. I was curious about Jason Aaron's take on the Hulk, since I've generally liked what I've read of his, but this is just bad, bad, bad. There's a germ of an interesting idea here (although I'm sure it's been done before), with the Hulk and Bruce Banner being separated, and Banner going crazy and turning into a mad scientist in his attempts to get his green side back. But there's just a lot of dumb stuff going on, some terrible dialogue (including an appearance from Doctor Doom in which he doesn't sound right at all), stupid new characters, and stuff that happens out of nowhere for little reason. But worst of all is the art by Marc Silvestri and Whilce Portacio, which is ugly as hell, full of tiny lines all over everything (plus gross Photoshop... more colors slopped on top of them), terrible facial expressions, inconsistent anatomy, costumes, and action, and just general terribleness. I could go through it and point out all the bits that are stupid, don't make sense, or are just ugly, but it's not worth the effort. I really shouldn't have bothered reading it. So, on to the next volume?
review 2: Aaron's strengths lie in two fields; the grim, and the hilariously OTT. Unlike his obvious inspiration, Garth Ennis, I've seldom seen him blend the two in one work to any serious extent - until this, a brief run on the Hulk. Bruce Banner always complains that he wants to be free of the Hulk, but what happens when he gets his wish? And the Hulk always says he wants to be left alone, but what would he do if he were? Contains hulked-out sharks, a psycho secret agent with a gamma fetish, and Doctor Doom performing brain surgery with a chainsaw. less
