review 1: Brilliant book. Stream of conscious narrative of a woman in her late 30's who observes the "perfect couple" at the Madrid cafe where she eats breakfast. This is a very unusual book, combining a possible murder, romantic relationships, and thoughts on life, death and relationships. Literary references are important also - Macbeth, a novella by Balzac and The Three Musketeers. I loved the way the story unfolded, with many twists. Not easy reading, but well worth it.
review 2: This novel fails to develop an interesting storyline for the first third of the novel. At times it rambles and the reader must ask-Why is the author saying in 500 words what he could say in 50?The story involves a random murder of the husband of a couple who Maria (lead character) has o... morebserved at breakfast over a period of several months. However the random nature of the act is called into question when Maria overhears a conversation between her boyfriend Javier and another individual who facilitated the murder. Suspicion is cast on Javier as to whether he arranged the murder so he can eventually position himself to marry the widow. The story does pick up in the last part and there are some clever twists as Maria must sort through the plausibility of Javier's alibi. However from my perspective there is too much talk and not enough action. less
