review 1: OK, where to begin, this was a superb story but it's one that you have to pay attention to and keep up with. It was a little slow at the beginning (at least that's the way it seemed to me) but it more than made up for it as it got going. The description and details in this book were jaw dropping, but yet not so much that it was boring. The story is great and I am currently working on the next one in the series. So much of this story aligned with the world today and where we are heading in many ways, I really think that some parts were a predictor of things to come, and that might turn some people off. I myself had no problem with it but then a I agree with it. In all this is a great story, give it some slack in the beginning if it lags for you, it will grab you and not let... more go very soon!
review 2: There is a bit of an information dump going on in the beginning that's a little thick to wade through at first. Not exactly confusing, but nothing that quickens the plot. But it's totally worth it and makes sense later on; its needed info that makes everything fall nicely into place later on in the story. So, once the pace picked up I couldn't put the book down and now there are tea stains and grilled cheese smudges on half the pages :/ The whole Japanese steampunk thing is a new concept, at least for me, and it painted a cool scene. I don't want to say it painted a pretty picture, because everything is grimy and sick, but it was definitely visually appealing in my head. If that wasn't enough, there's the feisty little heroine you can quickly fall in love with, revenge plots, betrayal, and an overall sadness for what's done to the land and to the people. Basically, by the end of this book I was quickly searching for the second. I would say it was well worth my time and it'll probably be worth yours. :) less

loved this book. the mix of shogunate japan and steampunk was weird but it worked in a weird way.

I really liked the different setting of the book, and how the POV's are written. (more later)
