review 1: The 2nd book syndrome strikes. Like Fitz, Vin & Katniss, Yukiko also becomes fairly whiny in book 2 for a while. However, the crackling pace of the book gets you past that easily. While my review for book 1 said gritty but not depressing, Jay Kristoff gets into full GRRM territory here put the Yukiko and other supporting characters through the wringer. A nice surprise in the book is easily the number of women POVs and the roles they play. Quite good and so looking forward to seeing how the trilogy ends
review 2: A Japanese steampunk historical fantasy about standing up for what you believe in, fighting for freedom, the gift of anger at injustice, and progress vs. environmentalism. The book is depressing and dark, as Yukiko and Buruu destroy warships, Yukiko str
... moreuggles to control her Kenning talent, Hiro is lost in vengeance, many of the Kagé are vindictive and violent, and there are betrayals and secrets. I felt tired and a little hopeless. Buruu is surprisingly eloquent and loyal to Yukiko, reminding me of Jane Lindskold’s Firekeeper and Blind Seer. But I wanted to know more about Buruu’s history and why the arashitora Yōkai-kin calls him “Kinslayer.” Yōkai-kin also seems much more aware and reasoned, while Buruu was more animal-like when Yukiko first met him. ** SPOILER ** The fact that 16-year old Yukiko is pregnant (with twins!) is disturbing and upsetting. less
