review 1: I love these stories that blend medieval with fantasy. Gaven was a wonderful first person narrator. The plot was good. It was captivating from the start following a young man on the cusp of true manhood who has to take a physical and emotional journey fraught with peril. There is so mystery to what is going on around Gaven and the world building is well written. The characters, plot and relationship development was well done. I look forward to what happens next.
review 2: Gaven begins with the abduction/arrest of its title character, Gaven, after his home is conquered by the Masarian army. As it turns out, he's the bastard son of a Masarian warlord and his father wants him to learn his ways. There's a huge culture-shock awaiting Gaven, who has to learn to
... more accept a society where men predominantly love other men as they are too busy warring to bother with women outside of child-rearing.I'm not entirely sure why I decided to buy Gaven and its sequels. I think I was buoyed by the five star ratings. Surely there's more to Gaven than sex, right? Wrong. Predictably, there's only a slim skin of a plot keeping this jumbled mass of sex together. Almost every element to this story is there only to enhance the erotica. The fantasy setting, the supernatural beings, the side-characters, the universe; all of it exists only to explain why men are having sex with men and to make that sex a little bit more titillating. Overall, the Gaven series is left feeling empty.Quite frankly, the character of Gaven is annoying, which is a major downfall considering the story is told in first person perspective. All Gaven does is gripe about his situation all of the time and in the kind of way that really does little to enhance his masculinity. Halfway through the first book, I felt like Gaven had turned into a woman. His love interest, Vlar, is no better. Honestly, all I can remember of Vlar is that he is some sort of supernatural model barbarian dom with green eyes and a very large member. So, all in all, Gaven isn't a horrible read so long as you are there for the sex. If you want to connect with characters on a deeper level, or are interested in exploring the fantasy/supernatural elements to the story, look elsewhere. As for me, I feel this was an okay read but I wish I hadn't spent money on it. Oh well. less

Hard to rate a book that doesn't seem finished. But I'm certainly going for the next book.
