review 1: The Waking Dreamer started out with a bang, but began to fizzle towards the end. Emmett was born in tragedy, yet rescued at the moment of his birth by Druids. They saved his life and sent him away to grow up until the time came when he was called to begin his life's mission as the Waking Dreamer. The opening scenes and the introduction of Emmett, later, to the Druid's home was very interesting and engaging, but the last portion of the book just seemed to lose steam, even though there were fights and struggles to survive. I was hoping that the characters would have had more depth, perhaps, so that I would care more about what happened to them. Overall, I enjoyed the book, however. I received an advanced reader copy through Net Galley. Thank you!
review 2: Fi... morerstly, thank you to Net Galley and the publishers for letting me read this in exchange of an honest review. The opening of this book was really good. I was instantly pulled into the pages and curious about the world. Then the book fast forwards, and we learn more about the magical realism that is quite unique. Yet at one point, I think beginning with the action scene when the Grove is attacked, I found the story hard to follow from then on. There was an over abundance of words that told me what was happening instead of showing me. I wanted to go through the story like the opening scene, where everything was shown instead of being stuck in the main character's inner dialogue. I have to admit I skimmed through it. By the end, the book was more of a 2.5 for me. less
